Its a crisp
morning in Laguna Beach....the waves are softly breaking....a group of pelicans
are flying overhead...its a perfect day for painting! A small group of professional
artists have gathered near the beach to paint in the radiant California sunlight.
Each week, this determined group of individuals meets at a prearranged location
to capture the beauty of a California landscape with their paints and brushes.
Originally formed as an occasional social event, these painting events have
evolved into an ongoing artists alliance. Their purpose for meeting and
creating as a group has fulfilled their need to experience and create directly
from nature, and to exchange ideas and opinions about art. Critiques of the paintings
take place at the end of each of these sessions, and the discussions are lively
and enlightening. What better experience could a landscape artist have than to
spend the day painting plein air and enjoy the camaraderie of their
friends!
Plein air painting is a popular practice with many artists who enjoy
outdoor subject matter. The French Impressionist movement in the late 1800s
began the tradition when artists started taking their easels to the countryside
to capture the ever changing light and moods of nature. While painting in a manner
reminiscent of the spirit of those early plein air artists, each member in this
diverse group creates in their own interesting and individual style. Their techniques
and methods may vary, but their commitment remains the same....to capture the
beauty of nature in a extraordinary piece of artwork.
